Does New Hampshire Require Drivers to Carry Insurance in Nashua, NH?
Generally, no. New Hampshire does not require most drivers to carry auto liability insurance, though people must be able to show financial responsibility after an accident that causes injury or significant property damage. That works differently from most states, where a policy is mandatory at registration.
When that happens, an injured person may face an at-fault driver with no policy at all. A claim may then need to be brought against the driver personally, and collecting on a judgment can be difficult if the driver has few assets.
Even when a policy exists, it may carry only the state’s minimum limits of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, which can run out quickly when injuries are serious.
Policies written in New Hampshire generally include uninsured motorist coverage, so a person’s own policy can sometimes help when the other driver has no insurance or too little, though limits and terms vary.
A car accident lawyer can look at what coverage the other driver has, review a person’s own policy, and identify other possible sources of recovery before the three-year filing deadline for most injury claims in New Hampshire passes.
If you have been involved in a crash where the other driver has little or no coverage, our team at Stephen Law can explain how New Hampshire’s insurance rules may affect your situation.
